Modern Standard Arabic

Modern Standard Arabic is close to classical arabic and it focusses on the formal, original form of Arabic. You will find that MSA is universally understood in all arabic countries and is the formal language in governments, newspapers, TV and official documentation. Our MSA course build’s a students ability in the four language skills (reading, writing, listening & speaking) such that students develop balanced and confident command of the language. It also gradually introduces grammar topics, and focusses on practical situations allowing the student to build their vocabulary and confidence in speaking in different scenarios.

How We Work?

We are on a mission of helping as many students as possible learn the Arabic language in the most optimal way, leveraging all available resources. We’ve started on this mission a bit differently to most other arabic learning websites – see how we work.

For this Modern Standard Arabic course (and all other courses) we follow the same approach. We first talk to our students to determine:

Where they are in their language proficiency,
What they want to achieve and then devise the
How – by putting together a customised learning plan.

One of the key components of the learning plan is the chosen curriculum (see below) as well as an experienced tutor teaching MSA.

Our Curriculum Books

The number of books and curriculums are many and our experience has shown that each students’ circumstances will be different; this is why we base our recommendation on what is best for them. Below are some of the key books we use:

1. Kitaab Asaasi - الكتاب الأساسي

This is a very comprehensive and intensive series with 3 books/levels and it’s material is very suitable for modern standard arabic. It covers a range of topics, slowly building a students vocabulary in real life scenarios, e.g. at the shops, hospital, train station etc. The book series is in Arabic and requires a teacher to practically explain key topics especially for beginners.

2. Al-Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk Books - العربية بين يديك

One of the most famous arabic learning books for non-native speakers, with the lastest version comprising of 4 levels with each level having 2 books (totalling 8 books). The book’s structure is based on a conversational format in real life scenarios and is well suited to build speaking skills.

3. Attakallum series - التكلم

A well structured book series consisting of 3 stages created by a team of professors with extensive theoretical and practical experience in teaching Arabic to non-native speakers. The curriculum has a step-by-step approach making learners feel comfortable and there are a wide range of supplementary materials including audio.

Each of these curriculums are supported by additional resources from our team such as extra supplementary notes per chapter, recorded videos, quizzes and tests to affirm understanding.

We are predominantly focussed on online learning, which offers the ultimate flexibility. All our tutors are well versed and trained on teaching online. But we also offer a greater level of flexibility by offering students the chance to immerse themselves in an Arab country and study here in Egypt. A learning plan can for example start online and then finish learning here physically in Egypt.



Support & Mentorship

A tutor is great in providing a valuable lesson based on a curriculum and generally ensuring the improvement in a students language proficiency. But outside this, there is a need for further support and we provide this by allocating each student a mentor.

Pricing

One of our core values is in offering affordable pricing which allows a good rate for our qualified tutors. The actual pricing may depend on the type of learning (group/1-to-1) and number of hours per month. As a general guide, group sessions are approx. $4 per hour and 1-on-1 private lessons $7 per hour.

FAQs

What is the difference between Classical and Modern Standard Arabic?

Both are very similar and takes the purest form of the language. MSA is actually the direct, modern day descendent of classical arabic and therefore include additional modern day vocabulary, e.g. television or التلفاز Classical or Quranic arabic is key to understanding the Quran whereas MSA is more useful for professional or academic reasons.

Do I need to read arabic?

Most of these books in this level require the ability to recognise all the arabic letters (in all their forms) and read basic sentences. If you are not at this level, the tutor will recommend a suitable preliminary course to learn to read.

Which book shall I study?

In the section above, we’ve gone through the books/curriculums we cover, which are all supported by our own resources. Once we know your level and objectives, our Head Professor will put together a customised learnng plan which states the recommended book/curriculum suitable for you. How long will it take to complete the course?

This will vary as we do not typically provide set course lengths – it will depend on the student’s ability and level of commitment. Learning a new language is not an easy task and requires patience, as progress will be slow at the beginning.

How will I learn?

Most of our students learn online but we are completely flexible in this too. For those residing in Egypt (or plan to come here) we have physical teaching in a traditional classroom available; we promote a hybrid model for those able to come to Egypt – this involves starting out online in your home country, then when you get to a certain level, coming here to Egypt to fully immerse in an Arab country and supercharge your learning.
