Classical Arabic

Classical Arabic is the language of the holy Quran and the root of all dialects. It is a rich language with great heritage in the fields of literature, theology and many sciences. The ability to speak, write and read this language fluently will allow you to truly understand the magnificent Qurān and other classical traditional texts. We recommend most of our students to start their Arabic language learning journey by learning the fundamentals of the classical Arabic, or ‘Al-Fusha’ as it is called in Arabic. This is because by understanding the root of the language, you will be better able to learn other dialects and communicate with the widest possible people. Our teachers are extremely well grounded in Classical Arabic with our Head Professor holding a PHd in Arabic.

How We Work?

We are on a mission of helping as many students as possible learn the Arabic language in the most optimal way, leveraging all available resources. We’ve started on this mission a bit differently to most other arabic learning websites – see how we work.

For this Classical Arabic (and all other courses) we follow the same approach. We first talk to our students to determine:

  1. Where they are in their language proficiency,
  2. What they want to achieve and then devise the
  3. How – by putting together a customised learning plan.

One of the key components of the learning plan is the chosen curriculum (see below) as well as a dedicated classical arabic tutor.

Our Curriculum Books

The number of books and curriculums are many and our experience has shown that each students’ circumstances will be different; this is why we base our recommendation on what is best for them. Below are some of the key books we use:

1. Al-Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk Books - العربية بين يديك

One of the most famous arabic learning books for non-native speakers, with the lastest version comprising of 4 levels with each level having 2 books (totalling 8 books). The book’s structure starts off with a conversation between two people followed by vocabulary, sentence formation exercises, and then reading comprehension.

2. Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University Arabic Learning Books

For those that have a bit more time to dedicate to their Arabic and Islamic studies, this comprehensive course is highly recommended. There are 4 levels with a wide range of topics covered in each level – reading, writing, grammer, Morphology (Ṣarf) all the way to Arabic Litrature (ʼAdab) and Arabic Eloquence (Balāgha).

3. Kitaab Asaasi - الكتاب الأساسي

This is a very comprehensive and intensive series with 3 books/levels and it’s material is suitable for both classical and modern standard arabic. This book series approaches the language through a series of themed topics, slowly building your vocabulary and then building the grammer and Morphology (Ṣarf). The book series is in Arabic and requires a teacher to practically explain key topics especially for beginners.

4. Arabic Grammar Books

Sometimes students require specific grammer books to be studied along other books, and our teachers recommend the following grammar books:

a. Al-Ajrumiyya – a classical Arabic grammar book written and is considered the go-to book to learn Arabic grammar across the Arab world. It is not suitable for complete beginners though.

b. Nahw al-Wadih – another famous book series that explains the grammar rules of the Arabic language in an easy and modern way.

Each of these curriculums are supported by additional resources such as extra supplementary notes per chapter, recorded videos, quizzes and tests to affirm understanding. The above books and curriculums are used specifically for online students but for those students that are based in Cairo, Egypt (or plan to come here) we have partnerships with the best arabic learning centers (who have their own curriculums).

Why Arabic8020?

Our strength and passion is in teaching classical arabic to students across the world. We do this in the most optimal way.

Personalised Learning Plans

We believe no two students are the same. It is for this reason we speak with students, getting all the key information and then set personalised learning plans for each student.

Highly Qualified Tutors

All our tutors are hand picked not just for their qualifications, teaching experience but also on their passion for teaching students and embracing our core principles. We have both male and female tutors available at different time zones for online learning.

Focused On 80/20

A central principle to who we are and what we do. Particularly relevant for new students we want to ensure they maximize efforts by focusing on what will give the best results (the 80/20 principle). So if a particular student’s objective is to improve speaking skills, we’ll ensure their learning plan reflects this and they get lots of speaking practice.

Flexibility

We are predominantly focussed on online learning, which offers the ultimate flexibility. All our tutors are well versed and trained on teaching online. But we also offer a greater level of flexibility by offering students the chance to immerse themselves in an Arab country and study here in Egypt. A learning plan can for example start online and then finish learning here physically in Egypt.

Affordable Pricing

Our passion is in helping students learn the Arabic language in the most optimal way. This guides us in setting fair and affordable pricing for our students – feel free to compare us with other providers and you’ll find that we are reasonable priced.

Support & Mentorship

A tutor is great in providing a valuable lesson based on a curriculum and generally ensuring the improvement in a students language proficiency. But outside this, there is a need for further support and we provide this by allocating each student a mentor.

Pricing

One of our core values is in offering affordable pricing which allows a good rate for our qualified tutors. The actual pricing may depend on the type of learning (group/1-to-1) and number of hours per month. As a general guide, group sessions are approx. $4 per hour and 1-on-1 private lessons $7 per hour.
